When school starts routines are changed with new schedules.  Homework and sports can cause kids to abandon their good habits of meal times, sleeping, and regular tooth brushing and flossing.  Staying up late to do homework after sports often involves snacking and tumbling into bed without brushing.  Stress can increase the acidity level in the mouth making teeth more prone to decay.  Decay is cause by bacteria in the mouth feeding on sugar ( including milk sugar, fruit sugar, and table sugar) and releasing acid as a byproduct. The acid softens the tooth and creates a painful hole.  Tooth decay causes a significant loss of school days overall in the US.  Make sure your kids lock into a solid routine of brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing everyday.  Six month recall appointments can be made by calling Dr. Nadine Hutchins 970-242-7373
